1. Our Standard
- A sharpening stone (preferably a diamond or whetstone)
- A cloth for cleaning
- Lubricating oil (like mineral oil)
- A screwdriver (if needed to disassemble)
2. Clean the Shears
- Wipe down the blades with a cloth to remove hair product and debris.
- Use a little alcohol on the cloth if needed.
3. Disassemble (if applicable)
- If your shears have a tension adjustment screw, consider loosening it slightly to avoid damage during sharpening.
4. Sharpen the Blades
- Angle: Hold the blade at a 30-45 degree angle to the stone.
- Technique: Start from the pivot and move towards the tip in smooth, even strokes. Repeat 5-10 times on each side.
- Consistency: Ensure you maintain the original angle of the blade while sharpening.
5. Check for Burrs
- After sharpening, feel for any burrs (rough edges) along the blade. If present, gently rub them away with the stone.
6. Polish the Edges
- Use a finer grit stone or a leather strop to polish the edge and enhance sharpness.
7. Reassemble and Adjust Tension
- If disassembled, reassemble the shears and adjust the tension to ensure smooth operation.
8. Lubricate
- Apply a few drops of lubricating oil to the pivot and wipe off excess oil.
9. Test the Shears
- Test the shears on a small section of hair to ensure they cut smoothly.
